Repairing a LED Work Light For The Mill

For several years I've been using a LED work light bought at the local home improvement center for machinery lighting. The promise of LED lighting is a bright, low wattage illumination source that will last a long time. While this light did great on the first two items, it didn't nearly have the promised lifespan. I could just replace the light with a new one, but then I would have to adapt the custom mounting bracket for a different light, so it's easier (and cheaper) to repair the old one.

Direct replacements for the driver and LED module weren't available so I purchased something reasonably close on Ebay. Luckily there's plenty of room inside the light so it was easy to find a replacement that would fit.

Here, all the old LED parts were removed and new holes were drilled and tapped to mount the LED module to the light. The metal chassis of the light, with the help of some heat paste, will keep the module from overheating.

Checking the voltage output of the LED driver. It will drop a bit when driving the LED module.

Everything is now connected and the light is ready to be assembled.

The light is now ready to be installed on it's bracket beside the mill.

The light is installed and working beside the mill. As you can see, it was way too yellow for my tastes. I should have bought a higher K value LED module for a cooler white. Luckily, the LED modules are inexpensive so I just ordered a different set.

The new LED module is more like the color temperature I want.

The yellow light bracket is based on a "dock light" like used at warehouses so you can see inside the trailer.

Here's the light bracket collapsed so I can gain access to the side of the mill to change collets and such. It's easy to get the light back to the normal, extended position by just grabbing the handle and pulling it away from the wall.

The replacement LED module and driver have been working great. I now have spare LED modules and drivers in stock so this light will be working for a long time to come.
